Connections
Connections are devices which are used to join elements of a structure together at a point such that forces can be transferred between them safely. Types of Connections according to connecting medium:
- Bolted Connections: Black Bolts, Turned Bolts, Ribbed Bolts Advantages:
- Silent operation
- Cold process, so no risk of fire
- Quicker than riveting
- Less manpower required
- Reduction in strength due to loosening if subjected to vibrations
- Unfinished bolts have lesser strength because of non-uniform diameter.
- Welded Connections Types of Welds:
- Fillet
- Plus
- Slot
- Plug and Slot
- Economical
- Higher efficiency than rivets
- Fbraication of complex structures is easy.
- Provides rigid joints
- Greater chances of cracking
- Members may distort due to uneven heating and cooling
- Inspection is difficult and costly.
- Riveted Connections
